Social Identity Theory

The Social Identity Theory is very important to a persons life, and shapes one to be who they are. A great example of this theory is the video we watch of the Baptists church. The wife of the family had 11 kids. Each kid is getting brought up to just like their mother. a "fag" hater and so on. They know of everything else as being bad, and a sin, even if it isn't they are told pretty much that anything the family doesn't do is bad, and your not allowed to do anything that you want if it is against what they believe in. These kids have only one social example to live by and to shape their identity. Unfortunately they can't even choose which social groups they want to identify with, only their families and church.

Social Identify Theory is a very important role for a person to adapt to. Most people will adapt to a group that they can identify with and they will pick up the traits and beliefs as the group shows, and follows. Like I have stated this is very important to shape a persons life.

Here is a video showing how kids use Social Identity theory to identify themselves. I think this is a way for them to choose a group they want to identify with and then start doing what the group norm is to do. This is a great example. Also it shows all the different types of groups and how they identify each group as different because they do not have the same norms.

Sex, Gender, and Sexuality

In class we did an activity about Sex, Gender, and Sexuality and discussed in groups what we would define each as and answered a few more questions on top of the subject. This got me thinking a lot because the word Sexuality my group had was very confusing to my group and I because the book would go back to it being a big part of gender. So as we are answering the questions and getting into further conversation about the word and meaning sexuality we found multiple means from multiple views and perspectives of what angle your coming form. To further understand the meaning Sexuality more and really deiced if it is only romantic or not I went on YouTube and found this video that better helps me understand the meaning of Sexuality and also Sex and Gender.

This video pretty much explained to a T for me. Which I now understand that All three of those words are really all based off of Gender Roles in the long run. We would like to say sometimes gender roles have no meaning in a topic of what sex you are but, really we use gender roles to identify the sex of a person. We also use gender roles to form someones gender in society, and also ones sexuality is often based off of gender roles and where one person grew up and learned to be the person one is. It is all generally one meaning that we as people but into categories.

Inequality in Gender

After touching on the topic about gender roles and inequality within gender, it really made me think a lot about it. Especially the conversation about Google and the search box. We talked about how when we would type in women should... or women shouldn't and men should or men shouldn't and what would come up. I was a little shocked when I saw such gender inequalities pop up under the search suggestions. I maybe shouldn't have been shocked, but I was. These search suggestions consisted of men being in control and being able to do pretty much anything they wanted to do, and women were basically talked about not being able to do anything in this society, but care for the household and children. This topic reminded me of a riddle one of my friends had told me about inequality between gender. So I looked it up on Google and found the exact riddle.

I myself read the riddle again, and still immediately thought the surgeon is another dad that the boy had thinking maybe step dad, I even thought that he could have gay parents who were both men. Never did I really think again that it was his mom. It is so odd how we have been shaped sometimes to think that gender roles are real and only for that one gender.
